Decoding AliExpress: How to Spot a Reliable Seller and Avoid Scams

Beware of enticingly low prices and learn to distinguish between authentic discounts and deceptive ones. It's easy to be lured by unbelievably cheap deals, but not all that glitters is gold. Take the time to scrutinize offers, verify their authenticity, and ensure you're getting real value for your money. Genuine discounts reflect quality and value, while counterfeit ones often come with hidden costs or compromised product quality. Stay vigilant, and always prioritize the integrity of your purchases over tempting but dubious bargains.

AliExpress, as a bustling online marketplace, is a treasure trove of products waiting to be discovered. Yet, in this vast sea of choices, there are pitfalls one must navigate to ensure a safe and satisfying shopping experience. The internet is rife with stories of buyers who have fallen victim to unscrupulous sellers, leading to disappointments, financial losses, and in some cases, even counterfeit or substandard products. To shield yourself from these risks, understanding how to identify trustworthy sellers becomes paramount.

Picture this scenario: you're enticed by an unbelievably low price on a high-end gadget or a fashionable attire. Excitedly, you make the purchase, only to receive an inferior product that barely resembles the description. Worse yet, the seller might vanish into anonymity, leaving you with no recourse for a refund or exchange (No worries, in this case AliExpress will step in and you at least will get your money back, but it is still a stress). Unreliable sellers can resort to tactics such as inflating prices before discounts, employing deceptive product descriptions, and even sending items that are significantly different from what was advertised.

So how do you ensure your purchases are safe and of high quality? In this guide, I'll teach you how to identify trustworthy sellers on AliExpress, empowering you to unlock amazing deals, save money, and relish top-notch products.

Focus on Seller Ratings

A seller's reputation speaks volumes about their reliability. Pay attention to the detailed seller rating, which combines factors like average review score, store age, communication, positive feedback, and delivery speed. A seller with a rating above 4.7 is generally dependable.

Shops with the highest ratings on AliExpress receive the status of a reliable brand. They are marked with a special badge and appear first on the search page. Moreover, all reliable brands are gathered on one page and categorized. However, it's essential not to rely solely on this badge: AliExpress has many stores with good ratings that have not yet achieved this status.

Positive Customer Reviews

Delve deeper into customer reviews. Seek out detailed feedback, especially those accompanied by images, particularly for high-value items. Genuine experiences shared by fellow buyers offer valuable insights into both the product's quality and the seller's professionalism. To access these reviews, simply scroll down on the product page or click on the "Customer Reviews" tab. Here, you'll find evaluations from individuals who have actually purchased the item. Additionally, you can navigate through the reviews by clicking on different buttons to view feedback rated with 5, 4, 3, 2, and even one star. You can also filter the reviews to show only those with pictures or opt to view "Additional reviews," an AliExpress feature where buyers can leave extra feedback, such as if an item broke after a week of use or if it withstands machine washing.

On the right side, adjacent to the review, you'll find the review date. This helps you discern if the feedback pertains to a recent purchase, indicating the shop is currently operational. It also lets you identify whether no one has made a purchase from this store in a long time. In the specific image provided, you can see that the product has received a total of 27 reviews, all rated 5 stars. The most recent review, dated October 15, 2023 (considering the date of this blog post, it was just a few days ago), gives you a current perspective on the product's quality and the shop's reliability.

Communicate Directly with the Seller

When in doubt, don't hesitate to reach out to the seller directly. Feel free to ask questions, request real product photos, and clarify any uncertainties you might have. A responsive and transparent seller is more likely to be genuine.

To do so, click on the "Message" button located at the top right corner of the product page. A new window will open, displaying the product you want to discuss. This streamlined communication process makes it easier to connect with the seller. Please keep in mind that due to time differences, you might not receive an immediate reply. Be patient and allow them some time to respond.

Explore Curated Sections

AliExpress features curated sections such as "Hot Deals," "Items under $5," "Deal of the Day," and exclusive discounts for mobile app users. These sections are moderated by AliExpress and include products from verified sellers, ensuring you get quality items at unbeatable prices.

Beware of Too-Good-To-Be-True Deals

While discounts are tempting, exercise caution when faced with unbelievably low prices that seem too good to be true. If a deal appears suspiciously cheap, take the time to confirm the seller's credibility and the authenticity of the product by delving into reviews and ratings. Start by checking if others have purchased the item and read their reviews. Be wary of generic reviews like "received, not tried yet." Additionally, pay attention to the shipping cost, as it can sometimes be unexpectedly high.

On AliExpress, numerous stores may offer identical products, displaying the same images and videos. It becomes challenging to distinguish the genuine sellers from those posing as authentic ones. It's also possible that all these stores are legitimate, but they work with different shipping companies, leading to varied shipping costs. Consider the following example: below, there are two shops selling precisely the same earrings.

On the very right, you'll notice the Top seller (indicated by the badge) offering the earrings for $2.82 with free shipping. In the middle, there's another store advertising the earrings at a promotional price of $1.35, which might seem like a fantastic deal at first glance. However, exercise caution and don't rush into decisions! Take a closer look: the message below reveals that free shipping is only applicable for orders over $10. This means if you're purchasing just one pair of earrings, you'll have to pay for shipping separately. As illustrated in the picture below, the total cost amounts to $3.34, which is higher than the cost of the earrings from the Top seller's store.

You might argue that the difference is relatively small, but this example serves a bigger purpose. When it comes to pricier items, the variation in total costs can be substantial. The key takeaway here is never to solely rely on the price listed under the item. Differences in shipping costs, specific colors or sizes (due to ongoing promotions), or conditions like free shipping only above a certain purchase amount can significantly impact the final price. Pay close attention, read the details carefully, and make informed decisions.

Conclusion

Shopping on AliExpress can be a rewarding experience if you know where to look. By prioritizing sellers with high ratings, positive reviews, and clear communication, you can make informed decisions and enjoy a seamless shopping journey.
